Brittleness is one of the common defects of springs, which can be divided into two types: heat treatment brittleness and hydrogen embrittlement after galvanization. Microscopically found that the fractures of hydrogen embrittlement include edges, frets, secondary cracks, etc., and hairlines and hydrogen micropores can also be observed on the fracture surface.

1) Heat treatment brittleness

Spring steel has a tendency to heat sensitivity and tempering brittleness, and its tempering temperature is often exactly at the junction of the first type of tempering brittleness and the second type of tempering brittleness.

Solution: Control the tempering temperature, tempering, heat preservation and cooling in time.

2) Hydrogen embrittlement

This is because before galvanizing, pickling must be carried out to remove the oxide scale, which will cause a part of the hydrogen to seep into the plating layer and the matrix metal, weaken the bonding force between the metal crystal atoms at the grain boundary and generate internal stress, making the spring brittle, that is, "hydrogen embrittlement".

Solution: Control the pickling time and temperature, standardize the galvanizing process, and after galvanizing, keep it warm at a temperature of 180°C for several hours before carrying out the hydrogen removal process, so as to reduce the brittleness of the plating and structure of the spring.
